So some of you may know that I am moving to Manchester from Newcastle Australia in 40 days.

I only have a few old friends in the UK, one in Lancaster and a couple in London.

So I'll be lonely and in search of some geeky friends. Please be my friend :( is that pathetic enough? And no Foley this is not an opportunity for you to make a smarmy comment, but I'm sure you will anyway :P

But seriously if you live in Greater Manchester or anywhere nearby I'd love to meet up and have coffee etc. Perhaps if there were a few people we could even have a Geekplanet Northern England meetup (which basically means the pub and maybe food but mainly alcohol).

I think I'm washing my hair that night. ;)

I think that might be just me and you chief, the rest are all southerners. I'm up for doing stuff. Apart from the GeekPlanet lot I have no geek friends really, so if there are any geeky activities, time permitting (I'm a dad, so free time is at a premium) I'll be up for it.

There's a Collectormania convention in Manchester that I'd like to hit up sometime if they have a decent guest list.

One of the plus points about the UK is that it's rather compact. You can get to London in less than three hours.

And there's a great pub just outside Euston station, where Manchester trains pull in...

Until a couple of months ago, I was a northerner (Leeds) and would have been delighted to meet you guys for coffee/beer/geeky chat, but now I've defected to the south :(

London based here also...

Sheds a manly tear as Caledonia swells in the background...

but just to reiterate what Chris says about making it to London from Manchester - it's easily a daytrip these days, and surprisingly cheap if booked in advance.

One of the OTHER plus points about the UK is that our trains run in both directions.

Whilst I can't promise it will be soon, Josh, I'm sure I can scrape the funds together for a Manchester trip at some point this year. It would be great to see Tom in the flesh again too.

You know, with enough advance planning I wouldn't mind the London Day trip idea. Josh and I share some cold ones on the train to London, get there at about 11. Meet up with everyone somewhere central; a bite to eat, and more drinks, then jump the train back at about five or something. It would actually be more preferable to me than the late night meet last time (enjoyable as it was) where one eye was always on the clock making sure I could still get a train back to my hotel before they stopped.

If I'd been responsible for people freezing to death at Croydon East Train Station, I probably wouldn't make comments about trains running in ANY direction.

We probably should organise another GeekPlanet meet. Or perhaps find nearer hotels (or ones with bus routes).
