Site Works Sat 04/06/11 6 years 4 weeks ago #9670

Hi all,

I'm going to be performing some software upgrades on GeekPlanetOnline next weekend, w/e of 04/06/11. whilst the upgrades themselves shouldn't take longnthere are a number of backup and safety procedures that will need to be run first, which will necessitate taking the site itself offline.

During ts time, the site itself (including the forums) will be unavailable, but the podcast feeds, etc. are completely unreleated, running as they do on separate software. In short, you will be able to upload new pod cats and make them live, but you will be unable to post them to the GeekPlanetOnline front page. Those of you with admin access to the site will find they will still be able to access the site by entering their password, but I must ask that you do not do so during the admin period.

This admin period will run 12:00 - 16:00 GMT. Those not already doing so can follow me on Twitter ( @geekplanetmatt ); I will tweet my progress, including when the site goes live. If all goes according to plan, the process will take no more than an hour or two and we'll be back online before you know it! And if not? I'll be putting in a sobbing phone call to Nik Butler, asking him to restore backups!

Thanks for your time!

Update: Site Works Sat 04/06/11 6 years 3 weeks ago #9706

The site works will still go ahead today (04/06/11) but due to conflicting appointments will not begin until later this afternoon.

The site will now be 100% available until 16:00, and then is scheduled to be offline between 16:00 - 20:00. Again, during this time our podcasts will still be available through both feeds.

As a reminder, could all volunteers and podcasters with posting access to the site please refrain from entering - which the site will allow in offline mode, depending on your access level - whilst the maintenance is taking place.

Apologies for the inconvenience, and thanks for your help.

The scheduled site maintenance is now complete. We have upgraded our CMS to a more secure version, and we have upgraded our forum software to match.

You may notice a couple of small changes around the forum in particular. The look of the forum has been updated, and there are now more options for listing other sites/platforms you belong to under your profile. The way the forum displays this information has also be changed.

The feature that I like the most, however, is the very community-spirited "Thank You" button. How you choose to use this feature is up to you, but I take it in much the same vein as Facebook's "Like" function. So, if a community member has posted something particularly helpful or enjoyable, be nice - say thanks!

As ever, if there are any questions or issues please post them in this thread: the most thorough testers are, as always, your users...!

Looks good and I've always liked avatars on the left on forums ;)

It also looks nicer on the iPad which also helps a bunch... Good work Matt...

GeekPlanet is no longer in retrograde.

Sorry. Astrology joke there. Ahem.

Looks all shiny and stuff. We have a Thank You button? That's so polite. I'm with Lee in that the avatars are a nice touch. It adds a flare of personality. Even the more subtle changes have this sleek vibe about them.

I just might have to post more.
