TOPIC: Fantasy Science-Fiction Club

Fantasy Science-Fiction Club 6 years 7 months ago #8617

At this time of year in America everyone is talking about their fantasy football leagues. I thought why not create a fantasy football league for science fiction fans? Here's the set up. Pick 6 characters from science fiction and related movies, books, comics, television, etc. Each of the six should play a specific role in the team much like players on a sports team. Here are your six categories. If possible pick from six different sources. For instance, avoid having more than one Star Trek or Serenity type person. This will encourage diversity in your team, forcing you to look elsewhere.

1) Leader - any team leader, either a starship captain, member of the Justice League, or what have you. He's your quarterback, essentially.

2) Expert - your scientists, your mathematicians, your masters of the occult. Anyone with vast amounts of knowledge whether scientific, medical, historical, or what have you.

3) Robot/Android/Computer - your artificial intelligence. Could be a transformer, a droid, a replicant. Whatever.

4) Alien - beings from another world, another dimension, another time, from Atlantis, what have you.

5) Wheel Man - pilots, drivers, anyone in control of a vehicle of some sort. Possibly a copilot if the leader fills this role.

6) Wild Card - This spot is reserved for your fighters, gun men, loose cannons, and similar riff raff.

My picks.

Leader Helen Magnus from Sanctuary
Exerpt Rupert Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Robot Soundwave from Transformers (even if he is a dick)
Alien Weequay skiff guard from Return of the Jedi
Wheel Man River Tam from Serenity/Firefly
Wild Card Rogue from the Uncanny X-Men

The Weequay is a weird choice. I just think they're cool. Also, they're based on Queequeg from Moby Dick. An awesome character and the spirit behind the choice. I think this choice also excuses my use of River as wheel man.

Exerpt Walter Bishop from Fringe
Robot The Engineer from The Authority (well. she has nine pints of liquid machinery instead of blood... guessing that counts:))
Alien Lorne from Angel
Wheel Man Sulu from Star Trek
Wild Card Professor River Song from Doctor Who

What's the objective of the Club?

Leader: Shikamaru (Naruto)
Expert: Metron (DC Universe New God)
Robot: Skynet (Terminator series)
Alien: The Doctor (Doctor Who)
Wheel Man: BA Baracus (The a-team)
Wild Card: Death (Neil Gaiman's Sandman)

Shikamaru, if you ever watch Naruto, make sure it's one of this guy's battles. Metron, because he's hard to beat as an expert. Skynet, I was thinking Brainiac but I already have Metron, Skynet may be a little too dangerous and prone to Nuking things. The Doctor, he'd be a good wild card but I had other plans for that. Wheel Man - it was him or Han Solo, and i'm not going with Star Wars for this. Death was a tricky choice, could be a useful ally, could be completely useless, may switch her out for Sosuke aizen from Bleach.

The objective is simply discussion and sharing our geekdom. Though we could always compare leaders to leaders, wheel men to wheel men and the like.

And Danny, I almost chose Mal as well, but River Tam edged him out.

Brilliant idea!

My picks.

Leader Captain James T Kirk from Star Trek
Expert The Doctor from Doctor Who
Robot Roy Batty from Blade Runner
Alien G'kar from Babylon 5
Wheel Man Jenna Stannis from Blake's 7
Wild Card Aeryn Sun from Farscape

The Doctor should possibly go in the leader category, but for me, going by the guide, he's the epitome of Expert. Aeryn just edged out Zoe Washburne for Wild Card. The Robot category gave me the most trouble, but I plumped for Roy Batty as I think he would bring a lot of valuable qualities to my team. I also think that he, The Doctor and G'kar would form a strong bond over time.

My team looks a little warrior-heavy, but Aeryn and G'kar are warriors who have, though difficult experiences, learned the value of peace. I think there might be a lot of conflict between Kirk and The Doctor, but Kirk does defer to superior knowledge and value alternative viewpoints (see Spock and McCoy) and The Doctor respects the chain of command until the command start acting like dicks.

Jenna is a valuable lieutenant as well as Wheel Man, and she has a calm, level-headed approach that would prove useful.

I love my team. They could probably rule the universe, but The Doctor would stop them getting above themselves. I think there would also be a lot of laughter and affection on my ship.

I was more thinking that i'd build a different team for different objectives.

Say if I was building a team of people to save the world, it'd be a different team to the one I'd want to win a football match or cook an omlete.

FANTASY SF CLUB

1) Leader - Jack O'Neill (Stargate)

2) Expert - Merlin (not any specific interpretation, more the generalised, though immortal, figure of folklore)

3) Robot/Android/Computer - The Doctor's Tardis

4) Alien - Elim Garak (DS9)

5) Wheel Man - Wedge Antilles (Star Wars)

6) Wild Card - Jayne (Firefly)

For some reason, I seem to think there'll be a lot of cynicism and underhand dealing in whatever we're doing...

I don't see any harm in designing other teams, you know, trying them out. Experiment with different combinations and see what happens.
