I, Probert

Hello there!

My name is Matt Dillon, I’m the creator and Editor-in-Chief here at GeekPlanetOnline. We’re an internet-based community and podcasting network, providing podcast hosting and publication space free of charge to podcasters from a variety of communities and backgrounds, and in turn, they work hard to entertain our own community with free downloads every single week of the year. Of course, if you’re reading this it’s a fair bet that you already know a little about who we are and what we do, so let me cut to the chase and tell you why we’re asking for your financial support.

In 2015,  after seven years of creating, hosting and publishing a number of popular and award-winning podcasts, the GeekPlanetOnline network’s overhead costs had grown beyond our ability to sustain them. We hatched a plan to make ourselves self-sufficient through advertising revenue, and we asked you to support us for a few months whilst we put that plan into motion – something which amazingly, brilliantly and generously, you did.

Unfortunately, in the months since that initial plan the UK has sunk even deeper into recession; costs have gone up, and agencies’ willingness to take a chance on a small community, irrespective of the number of downloads it receives per week, has all but disappeared. Under pressure to do more for less cost to their clients, advertisers either offer a fraction of a penny for a banner ad click or expect you to advertise their wares in return for “exposure”. Those that are willing to pay more than a few pence demand creative control in return.  In short, it has become almost impossible for networks like ours to generate any meaningful income.

And so, here in 2017, we find ourselves turning back to you, the public. If one of our podcasts has ever entertained you, if you like what we do and want to see it continue, or if you simply want to help an online community to continue to grow, please consider pledging just a few pounds per month to keep us going. If you would like to help but cannot commit to a monthly sum there’s also our tip-jar for one-off donations.

To be clear, I do not take a salary – or indeed any money – from GeekPlanetOnline. I have a day job which pays my bills and supports my family; that is not what this community is for. I donate my time running the servers, making podcasts and videos, getting the bills paid and providing editorial services free of charge and in my spare time. All contributions received go directly towards keeping GeekPlanetOnline and its content online, and if we are ever fortunate enough for our income to grow beyond our immediate needs, that money will be channelled into adding more content, more creators and more services to our community. We are open, we are transparent, and we will answer any questions about our spending. We’re not here to make a profit; we’re here to entertain you.

Thank you for your time. Thank you for your support. And thank you for considering a donation. We really appreciate your help.

Matt Dillon
