I, Probert

Hello, GeekPlaneteers, and welcome to the freshly regenerated GeekPlanetOnline!

To say that the last couple of months have been less than ideal would be an understatement; we’ve had staff members and podcasts leave the site, we’ve suffered technical problems, and there have been stressful moments as we struggled to recover over eight years of work and publication when it turned out that our main database was corrupt even in backup. But even the biggest of websites has problems from time to time, and we got through it; our podcasts are back online, our hosted websites are functioning perfectly, and now our main portal has returned from the dead! All in all, I’m quite pleased with how we have held up.

If you look around the site, you’ll notice a number of differences – some major, others subtle. Chief among these is a change of colour scheme and layout, which was undertaken as a small first step into making the site more accessible for visitors with disabilities; the high contrast provided between black/grey and white makes it easier for people with sight issues to read and browse the site. One of my goals for 2017 is to make GeekPlanetOnline as assessable as it is welcoming, to make it a truly inclusive community, but with our reduced staffing levels this will take time. I ask you to bear with us as we change for the better.

Content-wise, we’ve had to cut back on the sort of written content that we provide due to the logistics involved in sourcing review content and passing it on to our volunteers. Whilst our columns will continue to run, and one-off features will still be considered if submitted, regretfully all written reviews are on hold for now. Again, this is due to reduced staffing and will hopefully change in time.

And finally, down in the forum… we’ve had a bit of a spring clean. The number of sections has been pared back to allow for those more frequently used to shine. As traffic increases and demand becomes apparent we’ll consider adding other sections, but in the meantime, we hope you appreciate our reasons for slimming things down.

So, all things considered, it’s not quite business as usual, but we’re moving forward and improving things. Keep your eye on here, our main portal, and on our Twitter account for updates as they happen; we’ve got a lot of exciting things to announce over the next few months.

Welcome back. We’ve missed you.
